Good news: the performance problems I found in Showtime 50.0's gtk4paintablesink while attempting to play 4K videos… appear to be a collection of known issues that have their own tickets and pending merge requests.
The new finding, however, is that Mesa's "ANV" (Vulkan driver for Intel GPUs) does not seem to support P010 formats even when the hardware actually supports P010. Reported here: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/work_items/15984
@mehanix Nice to meet you! I believe Modulab are still active, many years ago when I was an art journalist of all things I got invited to check their physical space where they were playing around with robotics and SBCs, if I recall correctly... Their website is right now under construction, but it appears to be recently renewed.
Thank you for the tips, though I'd believe dothidden are more of a tight-knit group than a space - I'm skeptical they would be welcoming of someone like me, considering the age gap and the skill gap...
@mapache @osi @chaoss I really love the fact that the service lets you give credit on mastodon and linkedin. Free Software <-> Professional network. Good stuff. Also helps encourage migration to mastodon.
@mapache @osi @chaoss I mean I could lead it or GNOME Foundation (by association) but I assume the reason https://communitycredentials.org/ has paid plans is to help pay for governance, right?
@mapache @osi I feel like this is something we could ask @chaoss to help with - governance. They've already been doing badges and creating a pan-oss would be pretty rad especially for non-profits supporting open source projects => KDE, GNOME, Python, and so on. Being able to create to identify and value people who invest in our ecosystem and be able to show it off would be invaluable.
🧊 Ancient Persians were making ice in the desert around 400 BCE. No electricity, no moving parts.
Yakhchāls used radiative cooling (clear night sky as a heat sink), evaporative cooling from qanat water, and 2-meter-thick walls made of sarooj (sand, clay, egg whites, lime, goat hair, ash) to freeze water overnight and store it through summer. They even made faloodeh, a frozen noodle dessert people still eat in Iran today.
The word "yakhchāl" still means "refrigerator" in modern Persian.

@nekohayo @spanezz Yes, GNOME inhibits the lid switch when there's an external monitor connected
As for S3 vs S0ix, there are of course differences in the implementation but S0ix doesn't inherently waste power. Modern Standby causes problems on Windows because Microsoft actually configured it to keep an active network connection and periodically wakes the system to do background tasks like updates. We don't do that on Linux. Apple silicon (and qcom stuff) also works more like S0ix than S3
