One thing to note though, these only apply to people on mastodon.social and mastodon.online. They do not apply to anyone on other servers.

There's a similar system called groups which do federate, groups send every post in the group to everyone who follows the group, no matter which server they are on. More info at https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse
The downside of groups is someone has to set one up for each topic you want to discuss.
