@cstross @davidgerard I guess the main reason and USP (Unique Selling Point) for offshore datacenters (and those in space) will be "Run your illegal workloads at a place that is definitely outside of any jurisdiction so no one can seize your machines and data !1!!".
(Please no conspiracy theories about AI bros attacking codeberg etc. Let's all send our best wishes to the good folks at @Codeberg @codebergstatus to get the service up and running again, OK? :)
UPDATE 2026-07-31 12:36 CEST: It seems that codeberg is working again!
Not so happy #SysAdminDay for my friends at @Codeberg Not only is codeberg itself down at the moment, the mastodon instance they use for status updates at @codebergstatus is also down :(
@fionescu hey, yes, still in Bucharest! Is Modulab active? I actually never came across them in my searches and would love to pay a visit if possible. So far, nothing else with a physical presence, or full on creative technology focus, unfortunately, that I could find.
There’s dothidden but it’s more of an online community nowadays, with a strong security focus: https://dothidden.xyz/about/ meeting once a month on the last Wednesday, for talks about various hackerish topics, at FMI.
There’s https://www.robotics.unibuc.ro which is opening its doors to the larger community lately as far as I know, getting closer to a hardware-ish hackerspace without the commercial focus (like how Nod is, disappointingly).
But these are the only ones I know of. I also unfortunately managed to find closer knit groups around people focused on startups/AI stuff but that is absolutely not my cup of tea, so I won’t recommend those (unless you ask).
Hope this helps you! Let me know if you find any others, and let’s keep in touch.
@codingWombat To be honest, it's "just" simple WoL (Wake on LAN) in my homelab, no fancy management cards :) It's one of the reasons I use Lenovo Tiny PCs for my homelab. They have reliable WoL. UPDATE: Codeberg is back, so here a link to my gist with the config I use: https://codeberg.org/jwildeboer/gists/src/branch/main/2025/20250723PowerStuff.md @homelab
To celebrate #SysAdminDay, I updated and rebooted my 9 servers, as I do every Friday :) (These are my private machines, so if something goes wrong, I have the weekend to fix stuff). The twist today: this was done while I am on vacation at my parents, so all remote, including powering my homelab machines on and off :)
Your phone breaks. Your washing machine gives up. Somehow, buying new seems cheaper than repairing.
The EU is making the Right to Repair the new standard in Europe.
✅Repairs must be offered even after your warranty ends
🔧Parts must be available after the model is no longer sold
📅Choose repair under warranty and get an extra year of legal coverage
📍An EU platform will help you find local repair shops and fair prices
Less waste, more repairs. Good for your wallet, even better for the planet.
