Thanks to river straightening, locks on tributaries, modern ports, and high-performance motor vessels, the Rhine has become one of Europe’s most important inland waterways. Today, 150 to 200 million metric tons of cargo are transported on the Rhine annually; the exact amount varies depending on water levels and economic conditions.
