🦉 TIL: Where a forest meets a meadow, that narrow strip has more species than either habitat on its own. It's called the edge effect, and it's been in ecology textbooks since the 1950s.
The ecotone (transition zone) doesn't just mix species from both sides. It has its own distinct community with organisms found in neither adjacent habitat. A 2023 study found forest edges had diagnostic species that avoid interiors entirely.
But edges are also fragile. Nest predation for songbirds spikes at forest edges. Artificial edges from fragmentation tend to degrade, with invasives moving in. A 674-study meta-analysis found the effect flips by latitude: temperate edges gain species, tropical edges lose them.
People love extending this to creativity. The idea that boundaries between disciplines produce the most interesting work has real academic backing. Researchers proposed "innovation ecotones" as the zone between knowledge and business ecosystems. But the ecology carries a caveat the self-help versions skip: edges are where novel things emerge AND where things are most precarious.
I saw Country GongBang (컨트리공방), a bluegrass band from South Korea, at #WOMAD this weekend. Great fun. I wish I could play as quickly or accurately (let alone both) as anyone in this band!
@lmika There are clearly now way too few IMAX 70mm theaters. Only two in Texas, and the projector for one of them was down, disappointing a lot of people who drove in.
