Nothing special: admin work, office tasks, a little coding - no AI crap!
But with today’s memory prices - which are going to rise even more in the future - I’ve gone ahead and bought a model that has more than enough power for the next few years. And since my other mini-PCs (made in China) are starting to act up more and more, it’s better to buy now than to wait any longer until prices go up even more.
Change of plans: I didn’t end up waiting for the upcoming Minisforum MS-03 Workstation after all, but instead decided on the ASUS NUC16 PRO on a whim.
The reason was that Wendell from Level1Techs really praised this NUC in his latest video. He also highlighted the great Linux support from both Intel and ASUS. I’ve linked the video below.
And unlike many Chinese manufacturers, you can easily find all the drivers on their support pages (both Intel and ASUS)—including those for Linux! Plus, the download servers are fast, unlike with the Chinese manufacturers...
It has 32 GB of RAM, but unfortunately it’s soldered onto the motherboard on this model—though it does offer faster speeds.
I had to buy the NVMe drive separately; I opted for a 1 TB WD Black SN850X. Since I store everything on the NAS, I need virtually no storage space on the computer itself—just enough for the operating system; 256 GB would be more than enough. But a larger NVMe drive means more speed and a longer lifespan.
Other specs: Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, ASRock B390, 2x TB4, 2x 2.5-inch, 4x USB-A 10G, 1x USB-C 10G, 2x HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, two M.2 Gen5/Gen4 slots. It’s a breeze!
So, let’s install Linux on it! (To be on the safe side and to ensure the best possible support, it’ll be Fedora again...)

Haha, yeah, I've been saying for a while that the tooling nowadays makes it easier to create a complete OS than a single Debian package 🤣

Looking at https://github.com/projectbluefin/fsdk-containers/blob/main/elements/base/base-stack.bst there is a change in 26.08beta.1 (released a couple of days ago) which might be useful: runtime-minimal does not include bash or coreutils anymore (that will be in runtime-gnu). This allow more fine grained selection and the agility to replace the base tools with other implementations like toybox or the new rust based ones as Ubuntu. @hbons @federicomena Also IMHO goes in the same category as pixelized images, images with jpeg artifacts, or wrong aspect ratio. Which already before were something that was impossible to ignore for me but somehow most people didn't even notice
@federicomena That one I actually didn't notice yet. But we also need a name for this indescribable feature that all these AI generated images in restaurant menus, posters, ads, etc have. Something about being too perfect but average and lifeless. It's upsetting that I can't even put it into words.
But it's also interesting that so many small shops are using that now instead of stock images or paying some graphics designer or doing it badly themselves. And for many of the images I mentioned before most people don't even notice (and I'm not saying I always do, it became impossibly good if you try hard enough to make it look real).
Almost everybody hates it if you ask (or listen to mastodon), but almost everybody still seems to use it even if not forced to. Because it's too cheap? Too useful? Too easy? People think that's how stuff has to look now? I don't know, I'm not in the position where I have to make commercial graphics 🙂
@chergert Sure. The important bit is that it hasn't been established in precedent yet, and so you are taking on a legal risk by distributing it. The risk may be small, you and/or your lawyers may be comfortable with it, maybe in your jurisdiction that risk isn't so risky, etc. Still, a relatively elevated risk is present
I should have said "potential GPL violation". I have no opinion on whether the licenses are compatible and frankly I'm not qualified to have one
@chergert Yeah, a sysext should work like that. Or you could even just bake it into your base image. The problem is, of course, the legal risk of distributing the GPL violation (if you choose to distribute it)
As for why systemd won't support it: it's not part of the Linux kernel, and systemd targets things only in the kernel. Also, no reasonable way to test it. I won't speak for the systemd maintainers though. I'm sure @brauner or @pid_eins will have plenty of opinions
