@chergert Yeah unfortunately ZFS isn't in a state anyone can really ship meaningfully. We're never going to support it upstream

The good news is that btrfs is very close. We can do what zfs is doing but with native kernel block devices + a filesystem aware of thin provisioning (that's all ZFS is doing internally anyways)

Once we do what we need to in the kernel, ZFS is going to be behind. For instance, it's not using the kernel's blk-crypto support for hardware accelerated disk encryption

A letter from Nvidia about open weight models:

"Open weights let every organization match the right model to the right job at the right cost, reserving frontier-scale capability for genuine frontier problems and running efficient, specialized models everywhere else."

Jensen Huang had avoided social media until today, when he posted to X for the first time to share this. Hmm.

@chergert Yes, it would leak metadata just as bad. fscrypt is fundamentally leaky since it encrypts only file names and contents.

The only solution here is to fix thin volumes and then use those w/ the loopback file and proper dm-crypt (or dm-inlinecrypt actually). Good news is that it's being worked on. Bad news is that it requires relatively substantial work in the kernel.

@Drarok yeah, I often do as well, but when I forget it reminds me just how badly build many forms are

Substack tries to be too clever with its dickovers and even basic HTML and images. It means that a blog on Substack is unlikely to be indexed properly by the Wayback Machine. A real problem considering how much writing is on Substack.

Using Bluetooth to build a mesh network for local communication will get you a takedown request by the Indian authorities because decentralised communication will be used by terrorists, „anti-national elements“ etc. In this case it is about Jack Dorsey‘s new BitChat app, so you might think he deserves it. That would be wrong, though. Let’s see how Microsoft/Github reacts. https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/government-orders-github-to-remove-bluetooth-based-chat-app-bitchat-over-security-concerns-jack-dorsey/article71262049.ece

@duncandesi9n Thing is I have nothing really - it’s more of a back to basics things but without the structure of a book or course I just won’t practice like I should. Got a bunch of good recs in the replies to have a look at.
