@robinwhittleton fortunately, the machine was bought 9 months ago. And it was bought then (rather than waiting until my actual birthday) because of excellent advice from @martin that RAM prices were about to go through the roof, so it didn't cost that!
@klmr @gedankenstuecke I read the article. He doesn't disagree completely with the DHH's politics, he's just criticizing tone. In many ways, he sounds like a ra-ra pro-capitalist "moderate" saying many of the same things I hear people here in the US say who simply wish the Republican Party weren't quite so Trumpian.
Good thoughts by Dustin Bluck about the decline of indie podcast apps. While I was reading, I kept thinking “we need to do video!” and then I got to that part:
"Video podcasts should be embraced yesterday. There’s absolutely nothing about RSS that demands it be audio-only. Podcasts have never even been audio-only. There’s at least some evidence that video time is replacing audio. This is only going to get worse."
@ahaldorsen But beyond that, I don't know how much you know about how the PDS works, but given that it contains all your data, including posting history, you can actually fully migrate your account and plug into any of the other layers of the ATProto stack. You can argue most people don't do that and that's why the Atmosphere is decentralized, but that's less of a fault of the platform/protocol and more just about the userbase not really caring.
In the fediverse, your posting history is stuck on the server you sign up on, so while a larger portion of people may migrate their account, many, including myself, would be deterred by having to give up on our old posts.

Sorry, I have not tried setting this up myself, nor do I have a ton of technical knowledge in this area.
As for the topic of centralization, I think both networks just approach it differently.
If you look at https://atp.fyi/network, there is already a ton of community infrastructure, and Blacksky has been doing a lot of work around this as well, even hosting other communities now.
Google may advertise its new selfie video sign-in feature as a shiny new option to log into your account, but this is just an excuse to collect more of your data 😡

1. Brave has Brave Origin.
2. In Vivaldi it would nice if the functionality and profile were (optionally) bound. I.e. simple profile would actually reduce the amount of stuff. This like engineered version, if Origin is a demo.
The latter could be e.g., "paid version". Since it is a complex feature there could be like modest annual sum of money. I don't trust companies with lifetime subscriptions or one-time payments because it does not make sense to me.
Like 10-20 annually (Origin's one time fee was like 50'ish). I would pay that any day.
Actual computer in situ, including my oof-stone (from @8none1). copper hanging lamp (made by my dad) and Batman (because who wants to debug with a rubber duck when you can have The World’s Greatest Detective on the case?)
